We made a few wheelie good friends with the British Cycling team this summer!
Tre White and Izzy Whiteley have recently come into post as the new City Academy Coaches for British Cycling. Since joining, they spent the summer running fun cycling taster sessions throughout Hackney, including several on the edge of Hackney Marshes just outside KPMT’s summer pop up pavilion.
Rapha, a cycle clothing brand, supports the City Academy project, the aim is to create after-school cycling hubs in a number of Hackney parks for children, which will be their first stepping stone to trying out a number of cycling disciples, including opportunities to cycle on the track at the Olympic Park and try out their BMX skills.
Right now, the duo are linking up with the schools in Kings Park to bring cycling to children aged seven and over in their PE lessons. They bring all the equipment (bikes and helmets), and both Tre and Izzy will lead the sessions themselves.
You may be familiar with the name White in BMX terms, as Tre’s brother Kai recently won a silver medal in Tokyo so with coaches of the same calibre maybe it won’t be long before local children are selected to join the British Cycling talent team!
If you'd like to know more about British Cycling, Rapha or generally about other cycling opportunities why not take a look at Cycling Club Hackney who are already based at the heart of King’s Park and offer sessions each week for children, adults and a ladies-only group. The Club has been named Hackney Sports Club of the Year on several occasions. You can get in touch directly with the Club's Manager and lead coach at: keirapperleycch@gmail.com.
