Art at Heart

Art at Heart (Art in Libraries) is a project delivered between Hackney Council and Art School Plus, it was funded by Arts Council England. The project aims to place artists central to creative projects in Libraries, exploring ambitious approaches and for working in public spaces that are the heart of local communities.

As part of an action learning process 10 early-career artists and 2 curatorial students from Goldsmiths University undertook a development programme led by 5 mentors and Art School Plus with residencies in 4 of Hackney’s 7 Libraries.

The outputs were a Tool Kit for Libraries and artists working together and an Art in Libraries case study project bank. You can read the Art at Heart press release HERE.

Art at Heart Resources:

  • Art at Heart: Toolkit

The toolkit explores how artists can be integrated into library spaces and shares tips and best practice for artist and library collaborations. It takes learning from ‘Art at Heart’, a programme in which ten early-career artists spent time at Hackney Libraries to help bring art into libraries.

  • Art at Heart: Case Study Bank

The case study bank is an open resource, which anyone across the library sector is invited to contribute to. The hope is that this can give a more complete sense of the opportunities that exist to bring artists into libraries and share excellent examples of practice from around the world.
