Windrush 75: The Windrush Scandal

Cllr Carole Williams, the Hackney Council lead for Windrush and anti-racism, is joined by three guests to discuss the impact of the Windrush scandal:

Jacqueline McKenzie is a partner at city firm Leigh Day and its head of Immigration and Asylum Law. She was a member of the independent advisory group that delivered the Windrush Lessons Learned Review in March 2020, which resulted in an official apology from the Home Secretary and represents over 500 people affected by the Windrush Scandal. She is a campaigner on the rights of the Windrush generation in themes including education, social welfare, criminal justice and civil rights.

Patrick Vernon OBE is a British social commentator and political activist of Jamaican heritage, who works in the voluntary and public sector. He is a former Labour councillor in the London Borough of Hackney.

Glenda Caesar is a Windrush Survivor/Campaigner/Activist. She is a prominent member of the Windrush community doing advocacy work, and speaks regularly both in the media and at community events. Glenda has said that she will continue campaigning, scrutinising the scheme and helping others by being the voice of the victims who feel unable to come forward.

Following on from a powerful and moving conversation with Amelia Gentleman and Judy Griffith at Hackney Central Library at the end of June, this panel will discuss the lasting impact of the Windrush scandal on Hackney communities, and explore the next steps in terms of justice and compensation for victims of the 'hostile environment' policies.
