Seventy-five years after the HMT Empire Windrush docked in Essex, we celebrate the generation who came to the UK from across the Commonwealth between 1948 and 1971.
But it is impossible to ignore the impact of successive changes to immigration law by successive governments, which led to many of the Windrush generation losing access to housing, healthcare and bank accounts. Many were placed in immigration detention, prevented from travelling abroad and threatened with forcible removal, while others were deported to countries they hadn’t seen since they were children.
In 2018, Theresa May apologised for their treatment. An inquiry was announced and a compensation scheme established.
Amelia Gentleman's exposé, The Windrush Betrayal, shocked the nation. On 29th June, she will discuss the aftermath of the Windrush scandal with Michael Braithwaite & Judy Griffith, two victims of the UK's "hostile environment" immigration policy.
This event is hosted by Hackney Council and supported by Pages of Hackney, who will be selling copies of The Windrush Betrayal that Amelia Gentleman will be happy to sign at the end of the evening.
This event is free but you must register via Eventbrite to attend.
