Bloolips Living Leg-Ends Revisited

  • Hackney Archives, Dalston CLR James Library Dalston Square London, England, E8 3BQ United Kingdom (map)

In 1985 Bloolips radical drag theatre company launched their seventh show Living Leg-ends upon a waiting world. Described in Time Out as 'a new revue based around the influence of far-fetched stories on our morality. Delights promised include the destruction of Sodom and the forbidden rites of Passion’s Plaything.

The mind boggles!‘ Living Leg-Ends’ starred the icon that was Hackney-born drag queen, activist, actor and campaigner Bette Bourne who sadly passed away on 23rd August 2024. Forty years on from the show's first outing, our event will honour the work of Bloolips and Bette Bourne and revisit that celebrated production in the renowned company of fellow Hackney-born doyenne of Bloolips, Lavinia Co-op while presenting the unpublished text 'Living Leg-Ends' for a new audience. Sharing Lav's inimitable reflections on Bloolips' remarkable history, the event will also screen rare video footage and archive images of Bette and Bloolips in performance.

The event will also forms part of Unfinished Histories project FYFFI: Fifty Years of the Fight for Inclusion, marking the 50th anniversary of the first Gay Theatre Festival in Britain, staged by Inter-Action's Almost-Free Theatre in 1975. It builds on responses to last year's event which recreated Bloolips first group show The Ugly Duckling, where audience comments included: 'Brilliant, unique- I feel extremely lucky to have been here'. 'Fabulous, uplifting, generous, moving: a real treat'. It will be recorded for Hackney Archives who will also share Bloolips archive material from their and Unfinished Histories' collections: www.unfinishedhistories.com
